Q: How is Jeet Kune Do different from traditional martial arts like karate or tae kwon do?
Jeet Kune Do is unlike traditional martial arts in that there are no katas, no rituals and no belts.
Based on simple and instinctive movements this reality-based art is designed to teach self defense to its practioners in the shortest possible time.
Q: Does it matter if I've studied other forms of martial arts?
Jeet Kune Do as a system makes it easy for novices, as well as those who are experienced to learn self defense, due to its strong core principles based on:
- Simplicity
- Economy of motion (no wasted motion/energy)
- The longest weapon to the nearest target
- Always thinking of hitting
- The ability to adapt to any opponent
A good percentage of our school is made up of students that come from other martial arts systems, who tell us they like the common sense, no-nonsense approach.
Q: Is their a risk of getting hurt?
JKD is as safe as any traditional martial art; the Academy's classes are typically small and tightly controlled.
The chances of being injured during class are remote.
The chances of someone assaulting (you and/or your loved ones) and causing injury are much higher.
Q: Does the Jeet Kune Do Academy offer ground fighting?
Of course!
We understand the need to defend ourselves in the event we end up on the ground.
However from a practical, self defense perspective, we look for ways to get back on our feet as soon as possible.
Q: What type of commitment do I have to make?
We want you to make an informed decision before becoming member at our facility. You are welcome to try one of our FREE INTRO CLASSES, which are held bi-monthly at the academy.
We want you to see if JKD is right for you.
Q: Is sparring allowed?
Definitely, our sparring classes are optional, but highly recommended to enhance true proficiency.
This is where you'll get to test your combative skills.
JKD sparring classes are designed to integrate both mind and body strength.
The sessions are physically intense, yet controlled and provide a great workout. Safety is always emphasized.
Sparring classes are reserved for intermediate students.
Q: I'm a small person with little strength is JKD for me?
JKD is as safe as any traditional martial art; the Academy's classes are typically small and tightly controlled.
The founder of the art the late Bruce Lee was 5'7 and weighed 130 lbs. The art is not just about sheer power, even though it is taught.
However the main emphasis of JKD is placed on awareness, speed, sensitivity and the skills needed to overcome larger stronger opponents.
Q: What about exercise and stretching?
Because Jeet Kune Do is based on the concept of simplicity that's echoed in the academy's training curriculum; we are here to develop and enhance your martial arts skill i.e. timing, balance, coordination, sensitivity, precision, speed, mechanics, footwork and emotional control.
The nature of our training provides our students an intense physical workout. Though we do not stretch at the academy we provide our students with a daily stretching program that they can perform at home or just before class begins.
This not only enhances your martial arts performance, it is also a necessity for your overall health. Self discipline is one of the major philosophical tenets in JKD.
The Academy does not waste precious class time on superfluous activities such as jumping jacks, our primary purpose is to enhance your martial arts skill while improving one's self.
And as always you are welcome to try one of our FREE INTRO CLASSES, which are held bi-monthly at the academy, to see if JKD is right for you.
